“I think particularly as we've had the technology for longer and we've used it more and become more comfortable with it, there's really nobody, necessarily, that can't be considered for it,” says Aaron M. Bernie, MD, MPH.

In this video, Aaron M. Bernie, MD, MPH, discusses which patients may be particularly well suited for Aquablation for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Bernie is the director of the general urology program at Indiana University Health in Indianapolis.

Video Transcript:

I think [in] all-comers, the discussion can be had. Certainly men who have an interest or predisposition for discussion of sexual function preserving prostate procedures, those are great candidates front-line, as some of the other procedures aren't necessarily able to offer that. If that's something that's very important to them, certainly those are patients that it's potentially directed for. For patients that seek us out to look into that therapy, they may already know coming in that they're interested in one of those procedural options. I think particularly as we've had the technology for longer and we've used it more and become more comfortable with it, there's really nobody, necessarily, that can't be considered for it. We've been able to do it on men who are in urinary retention, have a catheter placed. We've been able to get them out of retention with Aquablation. While Rezum or UroLift have generally been thought of for prostate up to 80 grams, we've been able to expand that with Aquablation and take care of men with prostates well over 100 grams with good treatment effect. I don't know that anybody's not able to be considered for it. I mean, certainly if there are some folks that wouldn't be interested in going that route. Through our program here, our general program at IU West and then throughout Indianapolis, we offer pretty much everything available procedure-wise. There's nobody that comes in they can't at least have the discussion for it.
