"I would say the take-home message from this study is that HoLEP uptake has nearly doubled from 2016 to 2019," says Jenny Guo, MD.
In this video, Jenny Guo, MD, shares the take-home message from the Journal of Endourology paper, “Trends of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) procedures in Ambulatory Surgery Settings.” Guo is a urology resident at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois.
We definitely are doing a lot more research on same-day surgery HoLEP as it becomes more and more feasible and well established. And so, as we established the efficacy and feasibility of same-day surgery HoLEP, it will be important to reevaluate these uptake trends in the upcoming years. Another area of interest would be looking at the geographical biases and geographical uptakes in different regions of the US and around the world. Part of the reason why there's a regional bias may be due to a combination of lack of training exposure at certain sites, compared to trainees that are exposed to HoLEP earlier on at a large-volume HoLEP center. And it could also just be due to patient experience. A lot of patients, just depending on where they live, may not be offered HoLEP. So it'd be interesting to look at some of those differences.
I would say the take-home message from this study is that HoLEP uptake has nearly doubled from 2016 to 2019. Its popularity continues to increase, and as we establish the feasibility of same-day surgery HoLEP, it continues to be a very attractive option for both physicians and for patients.
