"It's really critical to recruit and retain diverse talent in urology to improve patient care and our health care system overall," says Alexandra Tabakin, MD.
In this video, Alexandra Tabakin, MD, gives an overview of the Urology paper “Increasing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Urology Residency Recruitment: Recommendations from the Society of Women in Urology.” Tabakin is a fellow in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, Great Neck, New York.
The diversity of practicing urologists is disproportionate to that of the United States population, and there's evidence to support that diversity, equity, and inclusion or DEI efforts in health care are associated with better outcomes. So it's really critical to recruit and retain diverse talent in urology to improve patient care and our health care system overall. This paper was created by the Society of Women in Urology Task Force on increasing DEI in residency recruitment. The task force identified 3 critical areas where programs can incorporate DEI principles into their recruitment strategies. These include defining a program's mission and values, using holistic review for the application process, and objective interviews. The other thing we did was discuss strategies to integrate principles of DEI within the existing residency program structure.
