In an interview with Urology Times®, Jason M. Hafron, MD, CMO, discusses his talk, “Barriers in Recruiting and Running Effective Clinical Trials in Independent Practices,” which was presented at the 2025 American Urological Association (AUA) Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“If you look at national data within the United States, 80% of trials do not meet trial recruitment goals, 50% of trial sites enroll 0 to 1 patient, and 30% of patients drop out of trial. So, it's definitely a significant need that we have to address, and that's what we're hopefully going to address today,” Hafron explained.
Hafron is the chief medical officer and director of clinical research at Michigan Institute of Urology.
Hafron also outlined several advantages to clinical trial enrollment in the independent practice setting. These include decreased travel times to care, close collaborations with institutional IRBs, and more.
He added, "I think the key to success of enrolling a trial is a committed PI, or principal investigator, or a research champion that's dedicated to research but also has dedicated time within his or her schedule so that research isn't a burden but a priority."
