Prostate Ca agent approved for men who have received prior chemo

Horsham, PA-The oral androgen biosynthesis inhibitor abiraterone acetate (ZYTIGA) was recently approved by the FDA for the treatment of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer in men who have received prior chemotherapy containing docetaxel (Taxotere). The drug is taken once daily in combination with prednisone. Results of a pivotal phase III study showed that treatment with abiraterone in combination with prednisone resulted in a 35% reduction in the risk of death (p<.0001) and a 3.9-month difference in median survival compared to placebo plus prednisone. The most common adverse reactions (≥5%) in the study were joint swelling or discomfort, hypokalemia, edema, muscle discomfort, hot flush, diarrhea, urinary tract infection, cough, hypertension, arrhythmia, urinary frequency, nocturia, dyspepsia, and upper respiratory tract infection.
